The Populations Affected by Organophosphates in their various guises
An examination of cause, effects and those at risk.

There have been "Support Groups" set up to represent poisoned farmers, pilots, soldiers and even rural residents but although they make a little progress in having their illnesses recognised for the most part officials who could change the situation can simply sit back and do nothing, accusing those in each group as imagining their symptoms.
Although this is far from a satisfactory situation the diverse groups have failed to recognise the common issues in all their health problems and have failed to join forces, as is needed if they are to win their arguments and gain full recognition.

It may well be true that commonality of symptoms does not offer proof that those symptoms have a common cause and science fully understands that a wide variety of chemicals can cause serious adverse health effects in humans. Many are known to cause harmful brain damage including compounds of lead, mercury and arsenic; bisphenol A (PBA); flame retardants; fluoride; manganese; aluminium; solvents such as toluene, benzenes and ethanol; phthalates; polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB); even Carbon monoxide and many others, but with the organophosphorus group of chemicals (OPs) it should be remembered that it is extremely difficult to avoid exposure to these chemicals because they are present in our food, water and the environment. OP fire retardants have even been found in the upper atmosphere, even over the Arctic
It is reported that there is no exposure level that does not cause harm as these chemicals are systemic and act at the molecular level.

With OPs all the symptoms are described as "non-specific" - in other words they are present in many other illnesses. If this is examined further it will be realised that the reason for this is that all functions in the body depend on natural phosphates and when those processes fail illness results. The commercial organophosphates are designed to target those same processes and to cause them to fail both in insects and in plants but what is so often forgotten is that similar processes in humans can also be dangerously disrupted by exposure to those chemicals and that the nervous system of insects and humans are very similar.

Organophosphorus chemicals can cause serious illness if they are ingested or inhaled but the one aspect that was recognised when they were first discovered is that they can be absorbed through the skin and can penetrate all but the very best protective clothing. The UK government admitted some 30 years ago that skin applications of these chemicals have exactly the same effect as injecting them directly into the blood stream. The nature of these poisons means that they can be taken up by every cell in the body, which is why they are called systemic poisons.

As has long been known "All poisons mimic natural disease and this is especially true with OPs.

Another concern is that the medical reports for exposed individuals, if they are released, will often describe patients as "asymptomatic" which implies that there were no symptoms but those who understand the term would know that this could mean that there were in fact very serious adverse effects from the exposure. Illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes and even cancers can be asymptomatic but tests done correctly by doctors confirm the serious and life-threatening diagnosis.

The most commonly reported symptoms in organophosphate poisoning involve cardio-respiratory and neurological problems. In fact death is normally caused by respiratory failure but the effects of OPs are far deeper seated than this suggests.
It has been known for many years that these chemicals can damage DNA, RNA, protein formation and the vital mitochondria that are essential for respiration, energy transport, cell survival and the programmed cell death that is vital for development and ongoing good health.

When the mitochondria are not functioning correctly all manner of health problems can result. Just some of them are mentioned in the information found at http://www.oprus2001.co.uk/mitochondria.htm and so it is not surprising that those exposed to OPs suffer diverse symptoms and that often all organs of their bodies suffer to differing degrees.
Some people will be more affected than others and although scientists claim not to know why this happens a simple analysis offers some explanation.

All humans are different. Some 3% to 9% of the population are genetically susceptible because they have insufficient enzymes to detoxify the poisons. Others may be on medication or have diets that make them more susceptible to exposure. Still more will be occupationally exposed or live in areas where they are environmentally exposed either to the chemicals or to those which increase susceptibility to the poisons, while others are naturally susceptible due to age or illness. It has been suggested that up to 40% of the population may be at risk.
In any group of people some of those exposed may seemingly be unaffected while others may be close to death even with the same level of exposure. A study of peanut allergy cases offers evidence that some people can be fatally affected by very low exposures if they are in a vulnerable group. It is dangerous to assume that those exposed who do not exhibit obvious symptoms are unharmed as all dose levels, no matter how low, have some effect and the results of that damage may not show for many years.

For the scientifically minded an explanation for increased sensitivity is found in the cytochrome P450 system where the light-sensitive proteins of the detoxification system may induce hypersensitivity to chemicals after they are affected by seemingly unrelated chemicals. This is why those taking certain prescription medicines are warned to avoid eating grapefruits because of the changes to the detoxification process. This may well explain why those poisoned by OPs become super-sensitive to very low exposures both to OPs and all manner of other chemicals, but it also offers a possible cause of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, a serious illness often denied by science but which has resulted in prison terms for those who have deliberately exposed susceptible people even to perfumes.
For those who wish to understand more about the cytochrome system it may be helpful to look here though there is much more information available.

When the OP enters the system and acts at the phosphorus bonding sites an imbalance in the calcium / phosphorus system can be triggered. This imbalance is known to be a factor in the release of minerals from the bone. An interesting study in Nottingham of 2,600 people, reported in 1994, found low magnesium levels in asthmatics and others with breathing difficulties irrespective of smoking habits. Magnesium plays an important part in the nervous, energy and enzyme systems. Black’s Veterinary Dictionary warned that magnesium supplements may accentuate any phosphorus deficiency, which indicates that the chemical can neutralise the action of phosphorus.
Underwood CBE stated in his book The Mineral Nutrition of Livestock that an excess of either phosphorus or calcium may interfere with the availability of other minerals such as magnesium, zinc and manganese, which indicates that excess phosphorus may restrict magnesium availability. Since the OPs replace natural phosphates in vital process they may well increase the presence of phosphorus triggering the imbalance mentioned above.

Because the structure of DNA is based on natural phosphates it is clear that OPs alter DNA and ion exchange in vital processes and that their bonding to a wide variety of different enzymes can result in the unavailability to vital process of essential vitamins, minerals and proteins and that these failures lead to a raft of illnesses that are increasing in the population.

Shepherds - By far the greatest publicity surrounding the organophosphorus (OP) exposure problem has been devoted to the Sheep Dip issue. The tragedy is that this group have effectively taken control of the debate and their lawyers were given control over all the legal actions related to OPs in the UK, preventing all other cases being heard by the courts.
The main reason for this is found in the troubling fact that the UK government, knowing the very real dangers to human and animal health, made compulsory the use of the organophosphorus dips into which sheep are plunged in order to control insect-borne diseases - not just once every year but frequently twice.
Because it was compulsory the work was often supervised by the Police, some of whom were as badly affected as the farmers by exposure to the vapours given off by these poisons.
There have been reports that sheep were killed by some of the dips, so dangerous are the OPs and their co-formulants, but shepherds and sheep were not the only victims of compulsory OP use.
It is interesting to note that the poisoned shepherds were said to be susceptible to OPs because of "flaws" in their genetic make-up with changes in the PON1 paraoxinase-producing gene. That very same damage in Gulf War Syndrome was reportedly caused by exposure to toxic chemicals.

Dairy and Beef farmers - as with the shepherds many in the UK also suffered from the effects of the poisons and animals suffered too, but the risk was known and considered an acceptable price to pay for eradication of a pest that damaged the hides of cattle that were used for leather goods. The Warble fly is an unpleasant little pest that evolved so that the eggs are swallowed by cattle in order for the pests to find their way though the body of the animals until they settle just below the skin on the backs of the host animals. There they breathe through small holes made in the hide until it develops into a large maggot causing swelling on the backs of the animals.
Eventually the larvae develop into the mature flies and leave the hosts to start the cycle over again
It was this damage caused to the hides and subsequent costs to the leather industry that triggered the compulsory Warble fly Eradication Programme that demanded the use of organophosphorus chemicals in the 1970s. Even casualty cattle sent for slaughter had to have a certificate proving treatment.
One very well educated dairy farmer knew of the dangers and refused to treat his cattle. The Ministry took him to court in an attempt to force him to comply with the compulsory orders. He won his case.
That farmer was Mark Purdey and he was later able to produce peer-reviewed papers that linked exposure to the protein altering organophosphorus compounds to the cause of BSE, a brain disease in cattle caused by the uncontrolled replication of mutated proteins.
Organophosphates can alter protein formation by damaging genes, blocking enzymes or replacing the phosphates used by the body to build proteins. All proteins are altered by adding or removing phosphorus atoms and OPs act at the phosphorus atom. Protein shape is all-important for their function.
Once mutated these proteins can be replicated by the normal processes in the body causing BSE but can also be spread to other animals by veterinarians who produce growth hormones from the glands of BSE animals and then inject those contaminated hormones into healthy animals.
Obviously the government was not happy that such a link could be proven between their approved chemicals and the most costly and frightening disease to hit farmers and the economy and so all manner of tricks were used to undermine the man who had shown us the real cause, and those who assisted him.
Despite the compulsory use of OP warblecides and the presence of other OPs with similar action in the food fed to cattle, government "experts" claimed that BSE cases had been found on farms that had never used OPs. This is most unlikely but there is much ignorance as to which chemicals really are organophosphorus compounds. Some farmers who took part in a survey, designed by Mark Purdey, also claimed that they had never used OPs but when they listed chemicals that they had used many from the Organophosphorus groups were in those lists. One such chemical is the most popular pesticide, Roundup. Because the link to OPs and pharmaceuticals was officially denied very lucrative control and research projects were set up basing the reason for their existence and vast expenditure on ever more bizarre claims in attempts to maintain their "infected feed" theory. First there was no possible transmission and then there was until eventually the scientists claimed that less than a gram of "infected feed" could kill a cow.
Feed was restricted but at the same time so was the use of OPs in grain and the use of glyphosate on grass before grazing or conserving the feed was also banned.
Inexplicably, if science is the basis for decision-making, the fact that OPs have also killed entire herds was "forgotten" even though Professor Collinge himself described how BSE begins as the very failures in the synapses of the nerves that are caused by OPs. Perhaps this is why the BSE Inquiry, with its vast volumes of evidence had to admit that OPs played a role in this farming disaster.
One of these OPs known as TEPP was used to treat a herd of cattle and all the animals died within 45 minutes as reported in "Black's Veterinary Dictionary" 1979.
The UK regulators denied that TEPP had been used in the UK but it was listed as an approved insecticide in 1984 ant a retraction was made but perhaps more importantly it has been reported that stored organophosphorus formulations can break down to form deadly TEPP without the users being aware of the dangers.

Veterinary Surgeons - are exposed to the organophosphates used to treat animals such as cattle, cats and dogs, and many have suffered adverse health effects known to be caused by those poisons, such as Parkinson’s disease.

Fish Farmers - have been poisoned by the OP chemicals used to control the lice that fish farms are plagued by when stocking density is too high.

Forestry and Horticulture workers also use a wide range of chemicals and over many years these have included organophosphorus insecticides and herbicides. Such uses are not compulsory but growers have come to believe that they cannot grow crops without using dangerous chemicals. Unfortunately adverts and television programmes that promote these poisons have often in the past shown no use of protective clothing or masks when applying the poisons and the false view of safety has resulted in many illnesses and some deaths from exposure to organophosphates.
A former worker for one of the OP manufacturers was reportedly killed by OPs from his own place of work when he used them in his greenhouses.
One popular horticulturalist was a big man who did not believe the dangers and so thought he was perfectly safe but he died just the same.
Some 20 years ago concerns were raised on national television in the UK about the dogs and cats who had been treated with the systemic OPs used to control fleas. This mirrors the problems experienced in farm animals.

Arable farmers, those that grow crops such as wheat, barley oats, potatoes, brassicas, peas, beans and oilseeds, usually on a large scale, have a vast array of chemicals that they use to control pests, weeds and diseases. Again Organophosphorus compounds are still widely used both as insecticides and herbicides not only in the growing crops but also in the buildings that store the harvested crop. Countless numbers of operators have been harmed by these poisons.
Despite bold label warnings not to even store these chemicals near food farmers have for decades been recommended to mix them with the harvested grain to be used for human consumption. Chemicals added to grain after harvest to prevent insect infestation have included - DDT; Malathion; Chlorpyrifos methyl; Etrimphos; Methacrifos; Pirimiphos methyl; and the pyrethroid Bifenthrin, some in combinations for which the toxic potential to humans is unknown, especially in the growing crops have been treated pre-harvest by other systemic Organophosphorus chemicals such as glyphosate.
Some grain buyers have insisted on such treatments before they would purchase the grain, even though there has been no insect infestation, and the grain was to be processed and cooked. Until recently the recommendation has been to add powdered forms of the chemicals to grain in what they called "the bucket and shovel" method where the poison is spread over the surface of heaps of grain and then mixed in with a shovel.
Other methods involved adding the chemical as the grain entered elevators or augers that fed storage bins or spraying the liquid chemical and the solvents used in the formulations (often benzenes, naphtha or mixtures of solvents) on to the grain as it passed along elevators. All those methods result in uncontrolled "hot spots" of excessive treatment, which some unlucky person will later eat.
Many farmers and workers have been poisoned by the OPs used for this purpose and by those used in the fields. In fact the only OP case won in the UK High Court involved the case of the late John Hill who was poisoned whilst treating wheat. It was reported when he died that the OPs he was exposed to were still preventing his respiratory system working effectively some 20 years after his exposure.
In another case a worker was diagnosed by hospital specialists as having been poisoned by OPs used in his place of work on the farm but that diagnosis was withdrawn on the advice of government "experts" after his early death - he was under 40 years old.
In another case a worker was given a double mastectomy when cancer of the breast was found after exposure to grain store chemicals. Some 25 years later after an accidental major exposure to glyphosate he died with all the cells in his body "inexplicably" breaking down. They called it "multiple cancers but the Post Mortem report failed to mention the earlier breast cancer and denied any link to OPs.

There are countless other cases involving these grain store OPs but two of note involved farmers who worked with them every day because they milled and fed treated grain to their cattle. The first was hospitalised many times until he was finally convinced enough that the OPs had caused his problems to insist on the required blood tests. Eventually the Health and safety Executive's own laboratories confirmed poisoning and "aged" enzymes but when he and his lawyer officially reported his experiences to officials his diagnosis was ignored.
The other case involved a worker similarly exposed on a daily basis because he milled and pelleted all the treated grain for over 150 animals and handled the same every day. Unfortunately he was exposed to a mixture of two OPs used in another grain store and was treated wrongly by an unsuspecting GP with drugs that were contraindicated in poisoning cases. He never recovered fully from the combined effects and was initially diagnosed as poisoned but to protect the chemicals the diagnosis was wrongly withdrawn, even though second and third and more opinions and blood tests confirmed poisoning. The details of this case are found here.

Hauliers, Delivery Drivers and Postmen have been poisoned by OPs. The case of a driver who was poisoned when delivering treated seeds to an experimental farm was featured on the Mark Thomas Show and other drivers have been adversely affected when OP containers have leaked in transit.
Another driver affected by the OPs added to grain gave up his job rather than be forced to tip the poisons into his loads of grain as he delivered them to the docks where the treated grain would be loaded into ships for export.

Mechanics and Maintenance Workers - have been poisoned by the OPs in oils, greases and fire control chemicals. In Agriculture those who repair crop sprayers have been poisoned by residues in the machines or when testing them in the field. In Australia there have been cases of Air Force maintenance crews being poisoned when re-lining the fuel tanks of fighter jets. Some were made ill from the fumes leaking from containers and others when the air-lines feeding fresh air to them were seen to rot because of the effects of the chemicals on the piping.

Sailors and Merchant Seamen - have been poisoned by the chemicals used for anti-fouling paints on ships' hulls to prevent barnacles from slowing the progress of vessels through the water. Merchant Seamen have also been badly poisoned by the OPs used to fumigate the holds of ships. Just such an incident was reported by the late David Ray in his publication "Organophosphorus Esters" but he dismissed the link to poisoning with the suggestion that the symptoms were induced by "Mass Hysteria".

Emergency Services are often the first to be called when people have been exposed to these poisons and they can be put at great risk of suffering the same fate as their patients because of the contamination of clothes and body fluids. In some cases of suicidal intent where these chemicals have been used the chemicals released by the bodies of the victims can be extremely toxic and medical personnel are warned to be especially careful so as to avoid exposure and subsequent adverse health effects.

Doctors, Nurses and Medical staff - are warned to use extreme caution with OP poisoned patients as they can be poisoned themselves from contaminated clothing and body fluids. Some nurses have been poisoned whilst working with OP chemicals in hospitals and others have been poisoned in District practices when treating children for head lice etc.
In one well-reported case a nurse was poisoned when working in a hospital. She was diagnosed as having been poisoned by OPs but later the toxicologists who made that diagnosis withdrew their diagnosis of poisoning and denied ever having ever given her that information. To their shock and surprise the nurse challenged the specialist and was able to prove that she had been diagnosed as poisoned because she had recorded the conversations.

Rural Residents - Readers may well ask what happens to those who live near places where these chemicals are used but they might not be reassured to know that rural residents have suffered badly from repeated exposures to OPs and to many other poisons sprayed on to the fields, railways, sports fields and waste ground around their homes.
For decades attempts have been made to end the exposures to those living near sprayed areas. In the UK there was some temporary advance in this battle for health when Georgina Downs of the UK Pesticides Campaign won her High Court action that exposed the failure to protect residents. The government had asked the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution to investigate the matter but despite having been given much detailed evidence their report claimed that there was little evidence and, as always, called for "more research".
Unfortunately government lawyers substituted that report for the much stronger evidence already assessed by the courts so that they could overturn the win by Ms Downs in the Court of Appeal.

In one awful case a rural resident heard a sprayer approaching and called his dogs in from the field near his home. He reached out of his garden to grab one of the dogs but was sprayed himself. One of his dogs died but he and his other dog were made very ill. Initially the veterinary surgeon diagnosed poisoning but later denied having given that diagnosis. Eventually the UK Health and safety Executive agreed to test the man and they found the degradation products of OPs in his samples. Having told him that such a result would confirm exposure the man was then told that the OPs found were simply background levels.
The man later died. The farmer was initially protected by the HSE but they were forced to prosecute by the supermarkets that the farmer supplied. In court the adverse health effects caused to the villagers were not mentioned and it was claimed that the farmer's illegal use of the chemicals had not caused any harm.
A report on the case is found here.

Ironically years later a new testing regime was introduced intending to study residential exposures, effectively an admission that the previous process offered no protection for residents.

City dwellers cannot be confident of avoiding exposure either as there are many reports of these chemicals being used in streets, on railways, the underground, on sports fields and even on waste ground.
In at least one case a man who marked out the lines for sports pitches was poisoned by the organophosphorus chemicals used to kill the grass under the white line markings. Another was affected and noticed that the pavements by his home had changed colour to blue and discovered that his street had been sprayed with a glyphosate product that had contained a blue dye.

Sportspeople - such as footballers and golf players who are exposed to residues on the balls, shoes and clubs have also been poisoned by OPs and golfers were warned not to lick golf balls to clean then because of the residues from the poisonous treatments used on grass. There are too many cases of young sportspeople dying while playing on the fields but few make the connection between the symptoms experienced and the chemicals used to keep those fields, courses and tracks in good condition.(See Sudden Adult Death Syndrome below)

It is sometimes surprising to realise just how many areas of life there are in which OPs are involved. Most people have absolutely no idea that OPs can be found in furniture or in computers, clothes and vehicles as fire retardants and insecticides but they are and they have also caused serious illness.
OPs are also found in paints and plastics. Workers who recover valuable parts from computers have been poisoned and overheating computers can harm user's health if care is not taken to avoid the dangerous emissions from overheating circuit boards.

Painters and decorators - suffer from the effects and in one case an entire family, including the pet dog, was poisoned by OPs in the plastic of window frames, which were at that time made "on-site". The poisoning was confirmed and deaths occurred but no authority dared to get involved, although the OPs were apparently removed from the plastics some years later and the window frames were no longer made on-site.

Pilots, Aircrew and Passengers - How many people realise that when they fly off to their holiday destination they risk serious ill health?
Have they any idea that the pilots and crew may suffer debilitating illness that could endanger the safety of the aircraft?
Aerotoxic Syndrome -The problem lies with the air supply to the cabin of the aircraft. Most aircraft draw in air from the engines as this appears to be the cheapest way to supply oxygen at altitude. Unfortunately oil seals in the engines sometimes fail allowing hot and vaporised oil into the air supply, resulting in what are known as "fume events" in the aircraft. Oils used in aircraft engines have to be able to work at high temperatures and OPs are added to keep the oils efficient under these extreme conditions. When fume events occur the fumes contain the organophosphorus tricresylphosphate, known as TCP. Although pilots have separate oxygen supplies to the passengers, pilots have been known to become confused, disorientated or even to blackout during fume events. The dangers are obvious and such events have been suggested as the cause of some very serious accidents. In addition to the exposures to the OPs in fume events on many long distance flights insecticides are sprayed over the heads of passengers. There are obvious dangers here too as it is known that some 3% or more of the population do not have the enzymes needed to detoxify toxins like OPs and exposure to combinations of toxins, especially in enclosed spaces present serious risk to health, with children, the unborn, elderly or those on medication at far greater risk than those in good health.
It should be noted that even the OPs that are deemed safe enough to be mixed with food for human consumption carry warnings that they are dangerous by inhalation and that users should "ensure adequate ventilation in confined spaces". Additionally " when exposure levels are unknown, or under any circumstances where air-purifying respirators may not provide adequate protection and that "self-contained breathing apparatus" should be used. Passengers and crew in aircraft are in confined spaces and they are exposed to a variety of chemicals, especially during long-haul flights, including flame retardants, pesticides and other OPs should fume events occur.
If those on board are adversely affected how can they be removed to fresh air as is recommended?
Protection should only be used as a last resort if avoidance of the risk or mechanical means to prevent the exposure are not possible, yet aircraft manufacturers have allowed this problem to continue for decades.

In December 2012 two young pilots both aged 43 died within days of each other. One was a man called Richard Westgate who had been a fit young airline pilot and a seriously competitive hang glider pilot. The other was a highly skilled female airline pilot called Karen Lysakowska. Both had been exposed to the toxic fumes in aircraft and their deaths caused a stir for a while but officials were soon able to forget and continue hiding the truth.
In 2014, just a month after a scientific report on the Westgate death was released post mortem findings involving a cabin crew member found similar evidence of organophosphate neurotoxicity and the deaths of two other aircrew were also to be investigated when post mortem results found no obvious cause of death.
For a report on these cases see here at Private Eye.

The Military - Probably the healthiest and fittest people are those in the military. Of necessity those who have to lay their lives on the line to protect their fellow countrymen or vulnerable people overseas have to be extremely fit and yet those very same people have also fallen victim to these poisons.

A very high percentage of those who have fought in modern wars such as those in Iraq and Afghanistan were also exposed to organophosphorus chemicals both as nerve agents and as pesticides used to protect them from insects.
For many years officials of government denied the use of these poisons but reports confirmed nerve gas release and repeated use of OP insecticides during the war in Iraq. Thousands of troops later suffered with what came to be known as "Gulf War Syndrome". In 1997 in the UK Parliament during a Select Committee Hearing over this issue Sir Peter Viggers expressed his anger in plain language saying that there had been "an obvious cover-up over OPs" and that "warning bells should have been sounding all over Whitehall over the known dangers of organophosphates."

Despite that being said at Select Committee level even greater efforts were made to hide the truth and the UK authorities have been persistently denying the dangers of OPs ever since despite admitting that those exposed to OPs should be very wary of vaccination because of the combined dangers.
In Afghanistan OPs are so "safe" that they have been used to poison schoolgirls on several occasions in efforts to stop the education of young girls. On other occasions OPs in food have poisoned large numbers of children with reporters suggesting that cooks "failed to wash the grain properly" even though OPs are systemic, which means that they enter every cell of what has been treated with them and so cannot be "washed off"

It may be interesting to note that the tents used by the troops in the Gulf were later sold as surplus to requirements. Some were sold to the Boy Scout movement and the risk posed by these contaminated tents was raised in Parliament.

Those who understand the way officials deny the dangers and the diagnosis were surprised to see the reports of OP Nerve Gas use in Syria and how not only were the officials able to blame the release of the gas, wrongly it seems, on the Syrian government, but they were also able to confirm from a distance of thousands of miles that those poisons were the cause of the reported symptoms. This was surprising given that those same officials could not diagnose poisoning in their own troops who suffered the same symptoms but were told they were imagining them.

In many parts of the world, including some homes in the UK, OPs are used in homes and other buildings such as hospitals and schools to control destructive insect pests. There have been reports from all areas of these poisons causing serious harm to human health and all too frequently deaths not only in those in treated properties but for neighbours too.

Could these issues all be linked - or is it all just a terrible coincidence?

Some 7% of the chemical industry income is derived from those used in agriculture and organophosphorus compounds make up a large proportion of those chemicals with the herbicide glyphosate being the most popular used by farmers, gardeners, and by forestry, district councils etc.
Many of the companies that manufacture those pesticides are also the producers of the pharmaceutical products that are used to treat the symptoms known to be triggered by exposure to those chemicals.
The sales of those treatments adds many billions to the profits of those companies.
Drugs to treat Cancer, Cardio-respiratory, Neurological (including those for psychiatric disorders), Hormonal and Metabolic conditions make up a large proportion of the very profitable sales for those companies.

Some illnesses consistent with the symptoms of chemical exposure.

There follows examples of illnesses for which there is a high probability that the cause lies in exposure to these chemicals. It is by no means a definitive list and many may doubt, or even deny, the links but if there is a possibility that exposure to these chemicals can trigger serious illness surely warning bells should sound and a thorough investigation be instigated?
Please do not dismiss the information found here. Check it thoroughly and let us know if any of it is wrong.

Anorexia is a known result of repeated OP ingestion and is often listed in the literature as a symptom of poisoning. Hormones are involved in triggering the feeling of satiety after eating and if this hormone is overactive it is likely that anorexia will be triggered in combination with peer pressure and individual fears. (See Hormones below)

Antibiotic Resistant Bacterial Infections - are the result of the development of mutated bacteria that cannot by controlled by commonly used antibiotics. This problem is often attributed to the over-prescribing of antibiotics in humans and the overuse of such drugs in farm animals but in both cases the drugs are normally only used to control infections, although some years ago they were added to animal feeds to improve health and growth rates.
Pesticides such as OPs are tested for their ability to cause cancers and other mutations by means of what is called the Ames Test. In these tests tester strains of Salmonella Typhimurium including :- his G46, TA 98 and TA 100, TA 1530, TA 1531, TA 1532 and TA 1534, TA1535, TA 1537, TA 1538 and strains of Escherichia coli such as WP2 her. Surprisingly, although this test is supposed to be used to prevent chemicals with mutagenic capability from being used, OPs that are admixed with food after harvest have been reported to mutate strains of Salmonella and yet remain approved for that use.
As a result chemicals that can mutate bacteria are present in the guts of humans and animals in the perfect environment to allow the mutation of the bacteria found naturally there.
Scientists have also raised concerns about the use of E. coli as a marker gene in genetically modified crops because the E.coli DNA will again be in the guts of those who consume the crops, together with the dietary OPs and the residues of the systemic OP herbicides used on those crops, again giving the perfect environment for bacteria to undergo mutations.
Given the presence of these bacteria mutating chemicals and the way the immune system itself is harmed by them perhaps it should be expected that new strains of mutated bacteria are developing, leading to resistant infections such as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureas (MRSA) which have caused septicaemia and untreatable infections which have killed and maimed so many patients in hospitals. It is reported that 1 in 7 patients in the UK can no longer be treated with antibiotics and that some 25,000 deaths per year are caused in Europe by infections that are resistant to antibiotics. It is a major global health concern and if the current trend continues even the smallest wounds could be fatal, just as they were before the discovery of penicillin.

Asthma and Allergy - It is interesting to note that foods that trigger allergies such as peanuts, milk, wheat and eggs all are permitted to contain higher than average levels of OP residues. OPs have also been linked to both causing asthma and to causing symptoms that mimic asthma, which can be dangerous because many drugs used to treat asthma are contraindicated in poisoning.
The action of the solvents used in the OP formulations is often forgotten but has been recognised by Government for many years and they have their own recognised Industrial diseases. They are known to cause leukaemia and to cause sensitivity and respiratory failure. Grain workers who are exposed to OPs and their solvents and other workers exposed to solvents are known to suffer more lymph cancers The manufacturers of washing powders, deodorants and cosmetics provide little information regarding the solvents, perfumes and enzymes used. Some deny making obvious changes that trigger reactions in formerly safe products. Even minute quantities of these products cause both dramatic and dangerously debilitating effects. Sensitised adults have reported these effects for many years. Children are unable to report these reactions but many families who have suffered skin or breathing problems can improve their health simply by avoiding the triggering agents. Those who do not listen may well have children treated with steroid drugs.
Asthma and allergy in children has now reached epidemic proportions. Adults are also afflicted.
In September 2014 warnings were issued suggesting that a TV baking programme could increase the levels of asthma in the population. The report stated that some 3,000 people, mostly professional bakers, develop asthma due to their exposure to flour and the Charity Asthma UK referred to the illness as "the baking bug". This is very strange because there is no such thing as a "baking bug" and Asthma UK and allergy researchers were informed of the recognised risks presented by the OPs in flour in the early 1990s - AFTER no less a body that the British Medical Association had also warned of the dangers of such residues in their publication Pesticides Chemicals and Health". In 1992 Southampton Hospital in the UK also knew of the risk of serious respiratory problems caused by the OPs in flour but kept silent.
It seems that our forebears who did more home baking over the centuries than is ever done in modern homes did not have such problems - but they did frequently find insects living in flour, no doubt providing extra protein.
The September 2014 report stated that isocyanates used in paints, mouldings and castings, and dusts from flour and grain were the main occupational 'respiratory sensitisers'. Others include solvents and perfumed products such as aftershaves and washing powders etc.
It is known that OPs adversely affect the cytochrome system and that this can greatly increase the effects of unrelated chemicals.
November 1996 saw reports on a lady living in a tent in Dorset because she had become allergic to all chemicals following her exposure to OP pesticides some years previously while working for government. So bad was her increasing sensitivity that she gradually became dangerously sensitised to emissions from electrical appliances and mobile phones, as often happens in those affected.
Ion exchange is an important process in the body and both pH levels and electrical signalling are involved, which may explain this problem.

Alzheimer's, Dementia, Parkinson's disease and other illnesses linked to brain damage are rapidly increasing in the population. Organophosphates have been linked to all of these problems. Some say that the brain is protected from chemically induced damage by the blood-brain barrier but for fat-soluble chemicals such as OPs and drugs used in psychiatry there is no barrier that prevents the chemicals entering the brain. Once there they alter the chemistry of the brain, block enzymes such as neurotarget esterase (NTE) and can cause serious damage to the functions of the brain
This can not only result in confusion due to memory and cognitive problems but because the brain processes signals from the whole body it can misinterpret vital signals resulting in vision, hearing, taste and sensation abnormalities, as reported by so many individuals who have been exposed to these chemicals.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) - is another problem that is dismissed by scientists but which has also been found to be prevalent in children with high levels of OPs in their urine.
This research was reported in the on-line journal Pediatrics in May 2010.

Autism, Asperger's - The Sunday Telegraph reported fears that Autism may be the result of chemical damage to children in the womb on the 26th May 1996. On the 25th October Meridian TV News suggested that Autistic children were usually normal until 3 years of age but then lost understanding of words. They estimated that 115,000 children were affected in Britain with a four times greater incidence in boys than girls.
Owen Sachs in the Mind Traveller, BBC2, 21st November 1996 reported that Autism involves the loss of neurons in the early development of the cerebellum in the brain in the first 3 months of pregnancy while other authorities suggest that Asperger's is the result of flaws in proteins. However these illnesses are examined they are the result of the failure of vital processes either during development in the womb or in early life.
Interestingly the courts in the USA confirmed that autism was the result of the failure of the mitochondria and it is known that OPs damage DNA, proteins and the mitochondria - all of which are involved in these illnesses.

Cancers - Several types of cancer have been linked to pesticide exposure and to organophosphates in particular. These include non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and pancreatic cancers. Some other cancers linked to these chemicals may also be caused by the solvents used in the commercial formulations. Benzenes for example have been linked to causing leukaemia. Any alteration or absence of essential proteins or changes in the DNA, both of which can be caused by OPs, can result in uncontrolled growth of improperly formed proteins and that in turn may result in cancers. Grain workers who are exposed to OPs and their solvents and other workers exposed to solvents are known to suffer more lymph cancers.
A scientist who worked on the development of OPs for agriculture confirmed that all the OPs tested were carcinogenic but the company developed only the least carcinogenic for agricultural use.
An agricultural chemical salesman died with a brain cancer. The man who took his job was later diagnosed with "Stress". As his illness worsened doctors discovered that he also had an inoperable brain tumour. He also died. His wife later developed Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
Officials have claimed for many years that "cancer is a disease of old age" and that there is not an epidemic of cancer but it is reported that there are some 1,600 cases of cancer diagnosed in children every year in the UK. It is also reported that cancer deaths have fallen in recent years but the incidence of cancers has risen. Only the treatment of cancers keeps that number of deaths lower than they otherwise would be and there are serious questions to be asked, as cancer treatments often induce other illnesses and the cause of death is not given as cancer but as the failure of some other organ or life giving process. Even so it is reported that some 160,000 people still die of cancer in the UK yearly.
It is said that up to one in three of the population will suffer from cancer.

Charge Syndrome - The Daily Mail 6th September 1996 reported that Charge Syndrome had a probable pre-birth pesticide related cause and resulted in several abnormalities including heart disease.
Organophosphates have been reported to cause over 100 different heart problems.

Cot Deaths, or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, - Fire retardants have been used in furniture, bedding and even carpets for many years and many will recall the controversy over the high levels of Cot Deaths, or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, which caused several innocent parents to suffer badly in prison after "expert" opinion categorically stated that the babies had been murdered. Scientists who pointed to the dangers of the organophosphorus fire retardants and the vaccines given to the exposed children were very quickly silenced but there is a similar problem in adults called Sudden Adult Death Syndrome and which takes just as many young lives. In most of these cases those involved are fit, young sportsmen with no history of health problems but they suddenly collapse with no apparent cause and often as the result of cardio-respiratory failure when playing sports.
Sports fields have been frequently treated with organophosphates and other pesticides.
No "expert" dares to suggest murder in these cases but they do feign ignorance as to the cause often suggesting pre-existing heart conditions or genetic defects. But how do they know that those defects were not caused by DNA altering chemicals? The truth is that they do not know but dare not contemplate the possibility.
In recent years it has been realised that there are similar factors involved in SIDS and SADS cases, such as ion channelopathies and DNA mutations, and so the new term used to encompass both is Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome (www.sads.org.uk).

Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) - Dr John Collinge, Imperial College School of Medicine, reported on "Panorama" on the 10th November 1997 that "The effects of CJD are pretty devastating. Essentially it’s killing large numbers of brain cells. In the early stages it’s destroying the synapses, the areas where nerve cells communicate with one another, but in the later stages the cells themselves completely die in very large numbers."
He has described a process beginning with the known action of OP toxicity at the nerve synapses.
However, organophosphates also alter protein formation and once the mutated proteins have been formed they can be transferred from one patient to another by injections of hormones etc., which have been produced from the glands taken from the cadavers of deceased people who carry that illness. This was proven in court as the cause of transfer of CJD in children treated with growth hormones in the 1970s and compensation was paid.

Crohn's disease - The "Big Story" broadcast on 3rd October 1996 stated that 1% of children suffered from Crohns disease of the gut. Lesions in the gut were produced in experiments with animals fed OPs. Reports suggest a measles vaccine link with the booster injection. Perhaps this indicates an OP induced immune system failure given that the residues of organophosphorus chemicals in grain will be in the gut. The immune system is known to be damaged by OPs allowing formerly overcome, latent, viruses to reactivate.

Cystic Fibrosis - is an illness that has been known for a very long time but the first recognition of the full aspects of it were not reported as known until the 1930s. Recent research has discovered that the genetic changes that trigger the illness are found at the same site in the genetic code as is PON1, the paraoxonase enzyme that is affected by OP exposure.
Cystic Fibrosis and PON are linked on chromosome 7. Eiberg et al. (1985)
The illness is described as a genetic disorder that affects the lungs, pancreas, liver, and intestines with difficulty in breathing being most serious symptom but also lung and sinus infections, poor growth, and infertility.
Once again while not explaining all cases there is a strong link to known OP damage.

Deaths - The World Health Organisation suggests that some 200,000 people are killed every year by organophosphates with some 25 million agricultural workers alone suffering from OP poisoning every year.
Sadly both figures are said to be underestimates, which should surprise no one because countless numbers of people suffer with "flu-like symptoms" without ever realising that they have been exposed to these poisons and in some countries, notably the UK, even those with confirmed diagnosis of poisoning are told that all their symptoms are "in their minds". If diagnosis is not officially recognised then all official data is suspect. This is compounded by the failure to recognise deaths caused by exposures unless they are Suicides and Murder (see below)

Deformities - as was seen in the tragedy of Thalidomide chemicals can harm the development of the foetus in the womb. As with the OPs all chemicals, including thalidomide, were tested for mutagenicity but clearly many effects are missed during the approvals process and it is clear that any chemical that alters DNA, proteins or the mitochondria can cause incorrect development in the womb. DNA itself is regarded as an organophosphate because the structure is based on phosphates. Any change in DNA is potentially dangerous. In fact during the approvals process for just one of the OPs deformities were seen in the offspring of experimental animals but instead of heeding the warnings the scientists dismissed the findings as unrelated to the chemicals being tested. One such deformity was the failure to seal the abdomen correctly leaving the intestines outside of the body. This has also been seen in humans and is called "Gastroschisis".
OP exposure has caused damage to sperm and to the viable eggs in the developing female foetus, as reported in many studies, and any such damage can trigger deformities that can pass through generations.

Diabetes - The pancreas is a vital part of the metabolism. The mechanism of stimulation of pancreatic juices is partly nervous and partly chemical. The action of the pancreas is innervated by the nerves of the sympathetic nervous system, which is known to be adversely affected by OP exposure.
Exposure to OP chemicals has been implicated in cases of pancreas cancer death and there are many cases where agricultural workers have developed diabetes due to the malfunction of the insulin regulating systems within the pancreas.
Section 29 of a draft version of the UK Health & Safety Executive's advice to medical practitioners MS17 stated that in organophosphorus poisoning
"glycosuria and hyperglycaemia and a leucocytosis and low grade fever may be recorded. "
Glycosuria is excess sugar in the urine. Hyperglycaemia is high levels of sugar in the blood - as seen in diabetes.

Interestingly some anti-hypertension drugs also induce diabetes and many with OP poisoning have high blood pressure because of the neurological changes and their control over smooth muscle etc.
The level of diabetes in children and adults is now reported to be at an all time high but it is suggested that obesity alone has caused that rise.

Digestive Disorders, Acid Reflux, Diarrhoea - OPs are in our food and often in our water and they alter our gut chemistry. The gut is part of the immune system, described as "the cradle of the immune system, both systemic and mucosal" in the book "Gut and Psychology Syndrome" by Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride MD, MMedSci(Neurology), MMedSci(nutition). For details see the list of useful publications here.
OPs can mutate bacteria but they also interfere with the action of the sphincter muscles that prevent food rising from the stomach. Those sphincter muscles are controlled by the hormone Gastrin and by the nervous system and OPs can interfere with the action of both. Many of the OP poisoned report rising acid, indigestion, and diarrhoea is a recognised symptom in acute poisoning.

Dyslexia - Many people poisoned by OPs find that they have trouble with colour vision and with reading and writing with many reporting that they become confused over spelling and the meanings of words, often getting correct words, letters and numbers but in the wrong order while handwriting deteriorates. It was reported 18 years ago in the UK journal New Scientist and on the Independent television news on the 4th June 1996 that dyslexia can sometimes be overcome by wearing coloured glasses, which suggests that an interference of brain signals occurs. Those who have been poisoned by OPs often report abnormalities in colour perception.
In the issue of the UK "Farmers Guardian" dated Friday July 25 2014 figures for the number of cases of dyslexia suggested that in the general population at least 10% were dyslexic with 4% severely dyslexic. The article suggested that the percentage of people in the farming community could be much higher as some 25% of agricultural students in one college were dyslexic.
For more information see http://www.dyslexiascotland.org.uk

Dyspraxia - It was interesting to see a discussion on the 8th March 1995 (This Morning. ITV) in which it was stated that Clumsy Child Syndrome is the result of improperly formed nervous systems within the womb in the first 3 months of pregnancy. It is found at higher levels in agricultural areas and is most severe in the children of farm workers. It was suggested that pesticides were involved.

Eczema - Dermatitis and skin lesions have been reported by farmers and workers handling crops treated pre-harvest by glyphosate. There have also been reports of similar symptoms in those who live or walk along paths through crops that have been sprayed with the chemical. Recently there has been the mysterious illness and deaths of dogs whose owners had taken them for walks through forestry plantations and woodland. Some suggest that these illnesses are caused by ticks but others are convinced that the dogs have walked through areas sprayed with OP herbicides and that the skin lesions and organ failures are more likely to be caused by those exposures and by the dogs ingesting the chemicals as they groom themselves.
Since the OPs are absorbed through the skin and trigger sensitivity it should perhaps be no surprise that skin problems have been reported in those who have made contact with organophosphorus and other chemicals, including solvents, found in furniture as flame retardants. Several sensitising chemicals are found in washing and personal grooming products.

Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS) is another issue where the authorities deny the reality experienced by those who suffer from it but is it really true that there is no scientifically supported explanation?
The proteins of the cytochrome system are photo-sensitive and shining a light on to the skin actually alters the heart beat. The feed-back system is extremely sensitive and links the brain, nervous system, gut and immune system in complex ways. Electromagnetism is just part of the light spectrum, which also includes ultra-violet and x-rays, which are known to adversely affect human cells. In fact in her book "Silent Spring" in the 1960s Rachel Carson quoted a prominent British scientist who stated that radio-mimetic chemicals [such as the OPs] could be more dangerous to the cells than is radiation.
Electrical power lines, mobile phone masts, mobile phones etc., all emit non-ionising radiation and government publications have stated that no radiation can be described as "safe". The information states that "All electro-magnetic radiation is harmful if there is enough of it." Reference to radiation usually means ionizing radiation, which occurs at wave lengths of 100 nm or lower where the radiation is of sufficient energy to penetrate the body and disrupt atoms in its path. The shorter the wave length the deeper the penetration.
A comparison of radiation and chemical effects can be read here.
Sadly in the UK the regulatory bodies for radiation, mobile phones and toxicity are influenced by the same "experts" who deny the science in order to protect industry whilst condescendingly suggesting that the symptoms for those affected are real and imply that they may be "all in the mind".

Epilepsy - "Poisoning with organophosphates (OPs) may induce status epilepticus (SE), leading to severe brain damage"
- see http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24881594. Many of those poisoned by organophosphates have suffered seizures, blackouts, periods of absence, and fits, but the true cause is rarely admitted.

Fertility problems - On 4th October 1996 Dr Hilary Jones (GMTV) reported that women who become violent with Pre-Menstrual Tension may also suffer from a shortage of magnesium. ME and Cot Death victims are also said to be deficient. OP utilisation in place of dietary phosphorus may even affect the reproductive system and it is noticeable that experiments have shown sperm damage and serious effects in bird reproduction. Since it is known that OPs can affect both DNA and RNA and that in some experiments foetal abnormalities have occurred it is likely that the unborn child is at greater risk. Of more concern is that any changes in the DNA are known to be passed down through several generations.

Gulf War Syndrome - although denied in the UK Gulf War Syndrome has been confirmed as linked to organophosphate exposure and to the pre-exposure protective treatments that are designed to limit the damage caused by these poisons. Others suggest that the use of untested multiple vaccines may have triggered these symptoms and they may well have a contributory role since the UK Committee on Toxicity admitted that people exposed to OPs should be wary of vaccination because of the effects on the immune system triggered by the OPs. Although certain sections of the psychiatric lobby protest that there is no physical cause of the symptoms such arguments fall apart when it is realised that DNA damage caused by the exposures caused deformities in children of those who were affected. To excuse that important detail statistics are used to suggest that these problems were no greater in GWS that in the unexposed population but that carefully neglects to affirm the fact that the entire population is exposed to varying degrees.

Heart conditions and Blood Pressure abnormalities - Organophosphates are recognised to cause over 100 heart conditions and there have been many cases of heart failure following exposure. In addition to the interference with blood oxygen levels the chemicals can adversely affect the electrochemical signally that controls the rate that the heart beats. Both bradycardia (slow heart rate below 60 beats per minute) and tachycardia (and abnormally fast heart beat at rest of over 100bpm) are recognised as being triggered by exposure to these poisons.
Many exposed people find that their blood pressure fluctuates widely for no apparent reason, as does the body temperature. The body tries to ensure the correct balance between the different functions and conditions that the body needs to survive. This is known as homeostasis and it is controlled automatically by the body. Exposures to chemicals like OPs, which disrupt the feedback and activating mechanisms that ensure this control, results in wild fluctuations in many different functions and offers an explanation for the experienced changes in blood pressure, temperature, blood sugar and oxygen levels etc.

Hormonal disorders - "Hormones, always in astoundingly small quantities usually weighed in millionths of grams, often start reaction chains that influence the entire future course of the life process.
They serve not as the building stones but rather as executive officers, organizing and directing growth, differentiation and maintenance of organisms by control over enzymatic chemical transformations.
Their importance becomes most evident in their failures, under pathologic conditions and in senescence.
" (Encyclopaedia Britannica)
Hormones are Chemical Messengers synthesized and secreted in small amounts into blood or lymph vessels by the Endocrine glands which effect the functions of the body’s cells and organs. Their usual chemical classification is into AMINES (e.g. Noradrenaline, Thyroxine); PEPTIDES (e.g. Oxytocin); PROTEINS (e.g. Insulin) and STEROIDS (e.g. Aldosterone, Testosterone). They are usually carried by the blood to bind to specific protein receptors within or on target cells some distance away. Hormone-receptor binding triggers a series of events within the cell, culminating in a cellular response (such as contraction or secretion). Some disorders (e.g. Diabetes insipidus, insulin resistance) are due to the absence or abnormality of Receptor sites. When OPs bond to those Receptor sites they effectively block the action of hormones. See these pages for more on the Hormones of the Endocrine System.
Additionally hormones are activated by the involvement of Cyclic AMP, which is also adversely affected by the presence of OPs as it is part of the energy process that depends on the cycling of natural phosphates.
The immune system involves several hormones and is therefore also vulnerable to hormone disruption, which can trigger many forms of cancer.
Since the action of all OP agents is at the phosphorus atom and since phosphorus is a vital element in almost all enzyme and hormonal systems, it is likely that a whole host of diseases may be unrecognised results of cumulative long-term chemical exposures, including and specifically the organophosphorus group and their solvents.
When hormone balance is disrupted a wide range of problems are induced including stunted or excessive growth, breast, prostate and other cancers, Addison's disease, Diabetes, Cushing's syndrome, Hyperplasia (adrenogenital syndrome), Hypoglycemia, Thyroid Goiter, Hyperthyroidism, Thyroiditis, Thyroid cancer, hyperparathyroidism, Osteoporosis, Paget's disease, Rickets, Pituitary tumors, Acromegaly, gigantism, Cushing's disease, sex development or intersex disorders such as Hermaphroditism, genetic and chromosomal disorders, Premature Menopause, Testicular failure, Delayed and Precocious puberty, fertility disorders, Amenorrhea, Polycystic ovary syndrome, and many other serious disorders including Autoimmune diseases such as Lupus.

Motor Neurone Disease (MND), Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) have also been linked to organophosphorus exposure and the affect of those chemicals on the paraoxonase, PON1 enzyme and on the brain enzyme Neurotarget esterase (NTE). Protein mutation is also involved.

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) - November 1996 saw reports on a lady living in a tent in Dorset because she had become allergic to all chemicals following her exposure to OP pesticides some years previously.
OPs and other chemicals in the formulations are sensitising chemicals and are known to trigger sensitivity to a wide range of seemingly unrelated chemicals.
It is interesting that the main causes of food allergy are those with admitted high levels of OP residues and include wheat, milk, eggs, beer and peanuts. The action of the solvents used is often forgotten but has been recognised by Government for many years and they have their own recognised Industrial diseases. Many of these chemicals are used in perfumed products and may well explain reactions to perfumes, aftershaves, deodorants, washing powders, fabric conditioners, "air fresheners" and many other products that are now unnecessarily perfumed. Some of the chemicals are known to cause leukaemia and to cause sensitivity and respiratory failure. Some have even caused death when used in confined spaces.
In some cases those who have deliberately exposed vulnerable people to perfumes etc., have found themselves in court and facing prison terms.
For more information on MCS see http://www.mcs-global.org and http://www.mcs-international.org

Multiple Sclerosis - Organophosphates are known to damage the myelin sheath of nerves and this "demyelination of the nerves" is a feature of MS, thought to be due to an autoimmune disease although the OPs may well prevent the correct actions of the enzymes that maintain this vital "insulation" of the nerves.

Muscular Dystrophy - In recent years this illness has also been linked to exposure to organophosphates due to mutations in genetics and chromosomal imbalance as reported by the Californian Department of Health Services.

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) - All too often those who have been poisoned by OPs are given this diagnosis by doctors who have no understanding of the effects of the poisons. In fact a diagnosis of CFS it not correctly possible in poisoned patients because it is a diagnosis of exclusion, made when there is no other obvious cause of the symptoms. In the early 1990s MPs admitted that ME cases in their constituencies were in people exposed to these poisons which interfere with energy production in the body and therefore trigger serious fatigue, especially on exertion. Toxicologists have admitted that the symptoms of CFS can be caused by OPs or a virus, which is why virus infection is often used to hide poisoning cases.

Obesity - although OP symptoms include anorexia sufferers of OP poisoning have reported problems with fat digestion. Organophosphates are highly lipophilic, they are attracted to fat, but they also present packets of energy as the energy transfer system in the body involves natural phosphorus and oxygen bonds. When OPs bond to enzymes they can form permanent links which the body finds difficult to break down and so ha to create new enzymes. It has been suggested that the OPs bonded to fat are difficult to break down and are therefore stored in the body fat for use when the diet is deficient. OP chemicals are protected from breakdown by other chemicals in the formulations and this may explain why OPs have been linked to causing obesity. It is of interest to note that obesity is becoming a serious problem in the USA, where GM crops are common, and now in Europe where imports of these foods are permitted and the chemicals are frequently sprayed on crops before harvest and added to the food grains after harvest.

Osteoporosis and Phossy Jaw - In the 1990s scientists discovered that those exposed to OPs often experienced marked deterioration in the density of their bones. At one point it was suggested that bone samples could actually prove OP exposure but no scientific evidence for this was presented. The bones are used by the body as a reservoir of minerals that can be drawn on to maintain the phosphorus : calcium ratio in the blood that is necessary for good health. Similarly the jaws and teeth also provide those minerals and they are closer to the hormones that trigger mineral extraction from the bones. A large percentage of those poisoned by OPs find that their bones deteriorate and their teeth crumble away. Treatment is difficult for most but impossible for some because these patients are placed in danger of losing their lives by anaesthetics and other organic chemicals used in dentistry.

Peripheral Neuropathy - is frequently reported in those poisoned by OPs but even when diagnosed officials refuse to accept that the chemicals caused the condition because they rely on the flawed results of the so-called "Hen Test in which hens are given massive doses of OPs. Unfortunately such doses will kill the hens before the neuropathy presents itself and so the scientists keep them alive by giving equally massive doses of prophylactic protecting chemicals. Common sense would suggest that this would negate the results of the test but scientists disagree and perhaps that explains why chemicals that have passed the Hen Test have later been shown to cause peripheral neuropathy in exposed humans.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) - used to be termed "Shell Shock" but even during the horrors of the First World War officials refused to accept it as a real illness despite the harm caused to those affected. Present day attitudes among doctors have improved and sufferers are no longer shot as cowards. Instead they are often drugged to oblivion and left to fend for themselves, sometimes a worse fate.
PTSD, also called "Combat stress", involves damage to the neurones and it is known that chemical attacks on the brain also induce stress. In the February 27 2004 issue of the "Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health scientists found that just "28 days worth of exposure to specific chemicals - when combined with stress - was enough to cause widespread cellular damage in the brain and liver of rats"
It has been reported that many cases of human poisonings have been wrongly diagnosed as PTSD case and treated incorrectly with psychiatric drugs.
See The Trauma Centre UK for Help with Post Traumatic Stress.

Psychiatric Disorders - Worryingly, although anxiety, confusion and depression caused by the effects of organophosphates are very well known, those who suffer from these effects are all too frequently given a diagnosis of mental illness.
Even those who have been given a firm diagnosis of poisoning are still told that their symptoms "are all in the mind" or are induced as a result of "somatisation" or even "a belief in poisoning"
In many cases, such as that of the poisoned airline pilot Leonard Lawrence, patients have been drugged so badly that they are unable to think for themselves or even to know where they are or what happened to bring them to lose their mental capacity. There are many, often young, people who have been poisoned by OPs and are then diagnosed as paranoid and treated with anti-psychotic drugs and very few are able to escape that trap and many become schizophrenic because of the effects of the drug regimes that further damage their brain chemistry and send the patients deeper into psychosis.
OPs disrupt hormone balance and it is stated that "Syndromes of depression may be a associated with a partial or absolute deficit of catecholamines, especially norepinephrine, in functionally important zones of the brain. In contrast, in some manic conditions, an excess of catecholamines is found. (Hormones. From molecules to disease. Baulieu & Kelly 1990)

Stroke - It is recognised that exposure to organophosphates can create symptoms that may be confused with those of a stroke. Of course there are numerous causes of strokes including haemorrhage within the brain, often due to high blood pressure; and loss of oxygen supply, but the OPs can directly affect the brain itself causing similar problems with vision, speech, swallowing and movement.
High Blood Pressure and anoxia (shortage of blood oxygen) are commonly seen in those poisoned by OPs.

Suicide and Murder - have long been associated with organophosphate use both as agricultural pesticides and Nerve Agents. Countless numbers of people who have been exposed have decided to end their torment and pain by taking their own lives, and there have been several studies that have examined this in depth. In the UK many of the poisoned shepherds have in desperation taken their own lives and it is well reported that in India hundreds of farmers have killed themselves using these poisons.
One case in Sri Lanka involved the suicide of a girl who changed her mind and rushed to hospital too late to recover. Her family were later accused of murder.
With these brain poisons it is easy to see how normal thought processes fail and how anxiety, confusion and inability to properly process thoughts and feelings can lead to suicidal tendencies.
Thousands of people have been murdered by OPs, often by terrorists as in Japan and Syria or by Governments, either by compulsory exposures, as in the testing of "volunteers" to see how great an exposure humans can take in experiments, or by attacks on civilians by rogue states.
Murderers have also often suffered brain damage by these chemicals before they kill. Several cases in Britain have involved murderers who have killed after being exposed and it was reported that the majority of those in Death Row in the USA suffer from a form of brain damage that is known to trigger aggressive behaviour. OPs cause frontal lobe damage to the brain, as reported by Korsak and Sato in the 1977, and this leads to loss of rational thought and reversion to instinctive behaviour, which can often be violent and destructive.
It is interesting that reports of violent crime in the UK are said to have fallen rapidly since the late 1980s when steps were taken to reduce the multiple treatments of grain for human consumption by OPs.

Vaccination - There has been much controversy over the MMR (measles, Mumps and Rubella) vaccine in recent years with claim and counter claim in regard to the safety of the vaccines. There has in fact never been a single MMR vaccine, as there have been many versions that have been withdrawn in the past on safety grounds, but the one aspect that is never raised in the debate is the effect of vaccines in those with compromised immune responses resulting from their exposures to OPs. No less an authority than the UK Committee on Toxicity has reported on the dangers of vaccines for those exposed to these chemicals and papers have been published in the Lancet, a medical Journal for doctors. Despite the fact that the majority of the population is exposed daily in their diet and environment to these poisons no authority has seen fit to warn the population of the risks.

Viral Infections - the link between a viral infection and OPs may not at first seem obvious but those who have been poisoned often find that rather than admit to the poisoning doctors will raise the spectre of "a Mystery virus. The medical experts may even by blatant enough to name a virus such as Coxsakie B or the Epstein Bar virus as the cause of the symptoms but toxicologists have stated that the symptoms of such illnesses as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome can be triggered either by a virus or by OPs so all may not be what it is made to appear.
So what is a virus? A virus is just a protein which has incorporated either DNA or RNA and because it is a protein it can be replicated in the body and can often cause serious disease, just as any altered protein can. Furthermore proteins and nucleic acids are merely chemicals combined in specific ways, nothing more, nothing less and the actions of the proteins depend almost entirely on their molecular shape as they need to bind to specific enzymes. Proteolitic ernzymes are used to break down and form the proteins but these enzymes can be adversely affected by OPs leading to wrongly formed proteins that are then replicated and cause illnesses.
"Proteins show an exquisite specificity of biological function - a consequence of the uniqueness of the three-dimensional structural shape or conformation of each protein." The toxicity of poisons depends more on molecular shape than chemical formula. "In humans, disease states are often related to the altered function of a protein. This is due to an anomaly in the structure of the protein, which in turn may be due to a deficiency in its synthesis." - see here.
The immune system depends on proteins and when exposed to OPs that system can be corrupted so that infections that have previously been defeated can be reactivated and new infections cannot be defeated. "Persistent viral infections" can result.
As a further complication it is known that virus infections can be created and replicated in the laboratory. The New Scientist magazine dated 14 October 2006 published an article on bio-terror referring to biochemistry as dual purpose because it can be used to kill or cure. The interesting thing about that article was that it referred to the creation of viruses and actually gave the chemical formula for one.

The chemical formula published for the virus was - C332,652H492,388N98,245O131,196P7,501S2,340

The virus represented by that formula was - Polio

"Literally the term organophosphorus (OP) compound means any organic compound containing phosphorus. (Organophosphates and Health. Karalliedde, Feldman, Henry and Marrs)
The virus is a compound that includes Carbon, Oxygen and Phosphorus and is therefore an OP. As a scientist reported many years ago it is the OP that enables the virus to replicate in the body and gives it the energy.
How many other viruses have these properties?

Williams Syndrome - was reported on 5th December 1996. Both parents are usually perfectly normal but a "deletion" on Chromosome 7 causes depletion of the Elastin Gene which effects the skin, heart, facial tissues and blood vessels and gives heightened senses of humour, sound, sensitivity and musical ability. (see Cystic Fibrosis)

With so many of these illnesses it has been suggested that by "replacing missing proteins the patients may recover. Genetic modification has been suggested as a possible cure for many illnesses but this could be more dangerous than the illnesses for some and it is an admission that DNA and/or protein damage is a cause of the problem.
Strangely finding and eliminating the causes is rarely suggested or considered and yet this would save a great deal of suffering - and money.

The current system can be compared with treating a baby for burns and then putting it back by the fire.

As seen from the above that there is a wide range of occupations and living conditions where unsuspecting people and children are exposed to these poisons. The official view is that exposures are controlled and limited with exposure levels that are usually below those that can cause illness. If that claim is carefully examined a completely different picture is seen. For residue levels of OPs in food alone senior scientist in the USA Environment Protection Agency realised the dangers in 1997 and called for an immediate ban on all OPs used on food crops. They were ignored.
Just two years later German scientists discovered the insecticidal actions of the organophosphorus herbicide Roundup and there were again calls for an immediate ban. Again it was ignored.
In 2001 Egyptian scientists showed that glyphosate, the organophosphorus active ingredient in Roundup, had the same anticholinesterase properties as the other organophosphates but the poison still escaped review.
Having produced their 1999 report on organophosphates, which denied known science, the UK's Committee on Toxicity looked at the issue again under a new Chairman in 2011. The Committee was asked to admit to what has long been known about the long-term dangers of these poisons in an acknowledged letter. Their much delayed draft report once again declared that more research is required before the dangers of OPs can be properly determined, but it that really true?

For many decades students of organic chemistry have been taught about the actions of OPs and the dangers presented by their continued use is obvious.

The UK government has frequently stated that the symptoms of OP poisoning are "common in the unpoisoned population" but they do not identify that population group and scientists who have searched for unexposed people to use as controls in research have been unable find unexposed individuals even in the remotest parts of the world, as reported in the book "Our Stolen Future".

The symptoms of OP poisoning are listed by various sources and depend on the actual formulation, the extent of exposure, the route of exposure, the health of the individual exposed, and the length of time of the exposure.
Some of the more severe symptoms may be delayed and with regular use the symptoms may not be realised until it is too late and serious damage has been caused. The chemicals are irreversible in action and cumulative in effect with initial symptoms after exposure that include exhaustion, weakness, mental confusion, and nausea, which could be missed by those who are frequently exposed. As exposure increases further symptoms such as abdominal cramps, sweating, increased saliva, running nose and streaming eyes, tightness of chest and constriction of the pupils. Muscular twitching begins in the eyelids, tongue, face and neck and muscular weakness and convulsions may follow. Both rapid and slow heart rates have been reported and arrhythmias are a common late feature. Diarrhoea, incontinence, ataxia (incoordination, clumsiness, eye movement and speech abnormality), muscle twitching, confusion, cyanosis, respiratory failure, coma and death may follow.
In Chronic poisoning cases neuro-behavioural disorders, cardio-respiratory, and gastro-intestinal symptoms are common. Deterioration of bones, chemical sensitivity, nerve and myelin sheath degeneration and progressive paralysis have been reported. Specific abnormalities of vision have long been suggested as diagnostic for chronic poisoning.
Sugar and creatine kinase levels in the blood may be abnormal and fever without infection has been noted.
Repeated exposures at levels below those causing acute poisoning may cause persistent weakness and anorexia.
OP poisoning can result in several recognised "syndromes".
The "Intermediate Syndrome" has been reported following poisoning by lipophilic (fat soluble) OP compounds. Limb paralysis develops some 24 to 96 hours post exposure after apparent resolution of the initial symptoms.
Delayed Neuropathy can appear one or two weeks after exposure and presents with peripheral neuropathy, paraesthesia in the toes and feet, fatigue and cramp. The gait is affected and the problems may persist for months or even become permanent.
Chronic neuro-behavioural problems have been widely reported and the symptoms include depression, irritability, confusion, chronic tiredness, headaches and dizziness.
Memory, language, writing, vision, and other cognitive problems have been reported. (more information here...)

Interestingly by far the majority of scientists who have researched the effects of OPs always call for more research despite the true deadly nature of the poisons having been known for well over 60 years.

Never before have those who are studying the effects of pesticides had so much information to hand.

Never before have scientists and doctors had the means to easily confirm the poisoning diagnosis.

Never before have so many been willing to help those in authority understand.

Now is the chance to be truly open and honest to the people of the world who have been the unwitting and poorly informed subjects of a vast chemical experiment.

Now is the time to give future generations the support and the protection they both need and deserve.

Organophosphates were designed to kill.
They should never, ever, have been allowed as undeclared food additives or released uncontrollably into the environment.
